The Leitchfield Police Department (LPD) is currently investigating the death of a 5-year-old child that took place Monday, Jan. 4.

5-year-old Thomas Savage passed away at approximately 3:24 p.m. EST on Monday at Kosair Children’s Hospital in Louisville, where he was being treated after nearly drowning at a residence on Hollow Drive, according to investigating LPD Detective Kevin Smith.

At approximately 1:06 a.m. CST on Monday, the LPD responded to Twin Lakes Regional Medical Center (TLRMC) in reference to Savage, who was unresponsive, according to a press release from Smith.

Savage’s stepfather, Matthew Durbin, had taken him to the TLRMC emergency room and stated to police that the child had been taking a bath, and Durbin went into the bathroom and found him unresponsive in the bathtub, Smith wrote in the release.

Savage was stabilized and transferred by air ambulance to Kosair Children’s Hospital where he later passed away, Smith said.

The Kentucky State Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy on Savage later today (Tuesday, Jan. 5).
