A one-vehicle accident caused damaged on Public Square Tuesday night when a truck narrowly missed the courthouse.

At just after 9:30 p.m. on June 17, a 1992 Chevrolet pick-up truck operated by 31-year-old Randall R. Coates, of Maple Drive in Leitchfield ran over the curb and continued across another lane before tearing down a sign and destroying a concrete bench belonging to the count as well as causing damage to a metal pole and the courthouse lawn.

Witnesses to the incident told responding officer Jesse Townsend, with the Leitchfield Police Department, that Coates “was driving at a high rate of speed and locked up his breaks, then he struck the curb and almost hit the courthouse,” according to the accident report.

Coates was uninjured in the incident, but was cited and arrested for driving without a license to be in possession and failure to have insurance, second offense.
