When Hout and Jenny Chhor rented out a small building on Brandenburg Road, just over the train tracks, in which to open up a donut shop, they could not have anticipated the enormous community response.
Now three weeks past Best Donut’s grand opening, Hout Chhor said, “It’s been better than expected. The response has been overwhelming.”
In the past weeks, it has not been uncommon for traffic to be stopped up along the stretch of road in front of their 707 N. Main Street location thanks to the flow of customers’ vehicles funneling into the shop’s parking lot and drive-thru lane.
Chhor said things are calming down now that the newness has worn off a bit, but that he and his wife still see a large number of customers on a daily basis, particularly on weekend mornings.
The entrepreneurial couple owns two other donut bakeries in Bowling Green and Frankfort, and looked into opening one in Leitchfield for about a year before coming across the building where they have now set up shop.
“This place needed a donut shop,” Hout Chhor said, and he quickly discovered just how right he was about that need. “We didn’t get this kind of response when opening our last two,” he said.
The shop is open seven days a week and offers a wide variety of freshly-baked donuts and other breakfast-type goods, though Chhor said the most popular items are the classic glazed donuts and donut holes.
With reasonable prices, friendly service and top-quality baked goods, Best Donut is quickly becoming a staple in Grayson County.
Best Donut opens at 4 a.m. daily, closing at 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
