Live wires set fires on Leavette Ave

Fallen power lines set a row of small but potentially dangerous fires along the intersection of Leavette Avenue and Short Street in Leitchfield on Tuesday morning.

Area resident Amanda Joyce said that she saw a tractor-trailer on the street and heard a loud “pop,” which was followed by the lines coming down and igniting.

“Semi’s aren’t allowed on this road,” Joyce said, “I think it knocked the lines down. It sounded like a gunshot, and then I didn’t know what to do, so I called 911.”

Leitchfield Fire Department responded to the scene to keep things under control, but maintained a distance until the power to the line was cut off.

Warren RECC representatives arrived on scene shortly and advised that the effected lines belonged to Kentucky Utilities, and that typical protocol would be for KU linemen to clear the scene once the power was off and repair the lines quickly.

As of press time, it was not clear whether an attempt would be made to locate the operator of the semi which may have caused the downed lines.
