The Leitchfield Police Department arrested a Caneyville man for attempting to burglarize Leitchfield United Methodist Church on Thursday, Feb. 20.
According to LPD Public Information Officer Norman Chaffins, at approximately 6:21 a.m. on Thursday, the LPD responded to a report of a subject who was acting suspicious and had just entered the building after attempting to go in through several doors.
When officers arrived on scene at Leitchfield United Methodist, located at 201 West Main Street, they entered the building and discovered Joesph Basham, 23, of Caneyville, inside with items belonging to the church on his person, Chaffins said.
Leitchfield Chief of Police Kevin Henderson said while Basham did not police give a specific reason for being inside the church at the time of his arrest, he appeared to be “just trying to steal anything.”
Basham was arrested by LPD Patrolman Braxton Allen, charged with Burglary 3rd Degree, and transported to Grayson County Detention Center where he is currently lodged.
Anyone with information regarding this or any crime is encouraged to contact the LPD either by phone at 270-259-3850 or online via the department’s website, www.leitchfieldpolice.org. Individuals who submit tips may remain anonymous.
