Twin Lakes Regional Medical Center will host its free “Love your Heart” health fair on Friday, Feb. 14 from 12 to 3 p.m.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women; however, it can be prevented and controlled.

The “Love your Heart” health fair, hosted by the TLRMC Cardiac Rehab department, will provide Grayson County residents the opportunity to gain important heart health information and heart screenings at no cost.

Free screenings and information TLRMC will offer during the health fair include Carotid Artery Ultrasound screening, Healthy Heart Nutrition information, Blood Pressure screening, Oxygen Saturation levels, Glucose screening (blood sugar), Fitness and BMI testing, Healthy Living information and more.

According to TLRMC Director of Planning and Marketing Bill Oldham, the term “heart disease” refers to several types of heart conditions.

The most common type of heart disease in the United States is coronary heart disease, also known as coronary artery disease, which occurs when plaque builds up in the arteries that supply blood to the heart. Coronary heart diseases can cause a heart attack, angina, heart failure, and arrhythmias.

According to the CDC, about 715,000 Americans have a heart attack every year, and about 600,000 people die from heart disease in the U.S. each year - that’s one out of every four deaths.

The “Love your Heart” health fair will take place in the TLRMC lobby. Snacks will be provided, door prizes will be given, and the first 50 participants will receive a free carnation.
