On Thursday, Jan. 22, 2014, at 5:43 p.m., Kentucky State Police Trooper Brett Coomes responded to US 68 KY 80 regarding a two vehicle injury collision.

According to Trooper Coomes, James Kemp, 48, of Russellville, was operating a tandem truck when he made a left hand turn from Hardison Road into the left westbound lane of US 68/80. As Mr. Kemp entered the travel portion of the westbound lane he that stated he observed two vehicles approaching from the east, traveling in the right lane. Mr. Kemp continued traveling in the left hand lane to give approaching vehicles time to clear. At that time, Kelly Whittaker, 28, of Russellville, struck Mr. Kemp’s vehicle in the rear. Kelly is the wife of Russellville Police Officer Seth Whittaker. Seth is the son of Logan County Sheriff Wallace and Brenda Whittaker.

Mrs. Whitaker sustained critical injuries and was transported to Vanderbilt Medical Center via helicopter. The driver’s of both vehicles were wearing their seatbelts and the investigation is ongoing by Trooper Brett Coomes.

According to a post from Seth on his Facebook page Thursday morning, Kelly is still being responsive to commands and vitals and her breathing is good. More tests are being done to determine the extent of her injuries.

The family is asking for prayers.
