Dana Peveler was announced as the new Grayson County Relay for Life representative at the first team captain’s meeting on Thursday, Jan. 9.
Peveler will replace former GC Relay representative Anna Way, who, following Relay for Life Kentuckiana’s recent area redistricting, will now represent counties in Western Kentucky, according to GC Relay for Life Event Chair Rose Mary Goins.
Peveler started with the Relay for Life in September, 2013 and said she’s optimistic about the opportunity to work with the GC Relay.
“I’m really excited to be the staff partner to the area and to see what Grayson County has to offer,” Peveler said. “It’s been a very gratifying experience [so far].”
According to Goins, this year, the American Cancer Society elected to reorganize all Relay districts nationwide to help cut down on representatives’ travel.
Relay representatives coordinate with counties to help each county’s Relay for Life event as successful as it can be, and Peveler has, thus far, been very enthusiastic to make Grayson County’s event top notch, Goins said.
“I’m in constant contact with her,” said Goins. “She’s very energetic…and that’s what made Anna so successful.”
The 2014 GC Relay for Life is currently scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. on Friday, June 20 and end at 7 a.m. on Saturday, June 21.
According to Goins, the 2013 Relay event garnered more participation than it had in several years, in part due to the popularity of holding the event at Grayson County Middle School.
Because of this, the Relay plans to hold the event at GCMS again this year to garner even more participation, something essential to the success of the event, Goins said.
“There’s nobody in this country who has not been touched in some way by cancer,” said Goins.
Meetings for team captains begin at 6 p.m. every second Thursday of the month at the Centre on Main in Leitchfield. Future meetings have been scheduled for Feb. 13, March 13, April 10, and May 8. Executive Committee meetings will be held before captain meetings.
The annual Survivor Dinner will begin at 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 1, and all donations will be turned in on Bank Night, from 5-6 p.m. on Monday, June 16 at Wilson and Muir Bank.
As of Jan. 9, Grayson County had formed more than ten Relay teams, but teams can still form and join the fundraising effort by calling Goins at 270-287-8400 or Peveler at 270-685-8701.
