A Leitchfield man was found dead behind the wheel of his car on Monday morning, Dec. 23.

56-year-old Michael Watts was found in the driver’s seat of his 1999 Ford Expedition just before 7 a.m., according to a report filed by Grayson County Sheriff’s Deputy Buck Meredith.

Watts’ nephew, Andrew Watts, called E911 Dispatch after discovering the Ford blocking the roadway around the 500 block of Hardin Road, four miles north of Leitchfield.

The vehicle appeared to have run off of the left side of the roadway and struck a tree, where it came to a rest, Meredith said.

The vehicle was discovered less than a mile from Watts’ home on Hardin Road.

The airbags in the Ford were deployed, however Meredith noted that Watts was not wearing a seatbelt when he was found.

An alcoholic beverage container was also found in the console of the vehicle, and the report notes that an “odor of alcohol was coming from Watts’ person” when first responders arrived on scene.

Sheriff Rick Clemons said on Monday that it had not yet been determined whether the wreck was the cause or a result of Watts’ death.

The Grayson County Coroner’s Office removed Watts from the scene of the accident to Twin Lakes Regional Medical Center, before transporting his body to the State Medical Examiner’s Office where an autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause and circumstances of Watts’ death.
