The Cougar Bots, Grayson County Middle School’s Lego Robotics team, has walked away with a second-place ranking after the First Lego League Regional Qualifier.
The GCMS team, which is coached by Melanie Gallagher and Tony East, beat out 15 other teams for the title in the Dec. 14 event in Glasgow.
The Lego Robotics program is offered to GCMS students as a part of the free after-school program made possible by the 21st Century Learning Grant which the school has been awarded.
Each September, a new challenge for the FLL competition is announced to participating elementary and middle school teams. The challenges focus on real-world topics related to the sciences, and students create solutions and design and program their robots. They then gather at regional tournaments to share their knowledge, compare ideas and display their robots.
Students are judged in the following categories: robot design, project presentation, core values, and table performance.
