The construction of Leitchfield Aquatic Center is currently ahead of schedule, according to Leitchfield Tourism Director Ilsa Johnson.
At the Leitchfield Tourism Commission’s specially called Wednesday, October 30 meeting, it was announced that due to a delay in state approval of the pool design, the aquatic center’s opening had been pushed back from May 2014 to July 2014.
However, in a phone interview on Thursday, December 19, Johnson said the aquatic center’s construction is progressing at such a pace that, as of now, it appears as though it will be completed before July.
“They’re making a lot of progress on the pool,” she said. “Everything is a little bit above schedule.”
This update was provided during the specially called Tourism Commission meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 17.
Also during Tuesday’s meeting, the Tourism Commission decided to not eliminate any features from the aquatic center, Johnson said.
Due to the aforementioned delay in state approval, the Tourism Commission had previously been forced to consider eliminating a number of aquatic center features to cover additional expenses that arose as a result of the delay.
Features that may have been eliminated included the monument sign with the center’s name, paved parking, and lockers.
In other business:
*It was announced that Future Designs will donate materials for the construction of a pavilion at the aquatic center.
This pavilion will be a permanent structure with electricity, Johnson said.
The aquatic center will feature a second shade pavilion, as well, she said.
*Johnson said the Tourism Commission will, at its next meeting, select the type of roof the pavilion will have, as well as what colors the pavilion’s roof will be.
*Johnson reported that the Grayson County Chamber of Commerce Breakfast will be held on Thursday, January 9 and will be sponsored by the City.
