The Leitchfield Police Department recently presented the first of its newly-instituted awards to four officers.
The first, LPD Patrolman Robert Jackson, was voted the 2013 Officer of the Year by his fellow officers.
Leitchfield Chief of Police Kevin Henderson said Jackson deserves the award because of the obstacles he has overcome in the last year.
Henderson said Jackson suffered a heart attack in 2012 and took a number of months to fully recover.
“It took him two or three months to get back to 100%, but he’s back to 100%,” Henderson said.
In addition, the LPD recently presented the first ever Citation for Bravery Award to Trooper Brandon Brooks, of the Kentucky State Police, Sergeant Brandon Cook, and retired Sergeant Jack Holland, according to Henderson.
The City of Leitchfield approved the LPD’s request to institute an Awards Board - consisting of the Chief of Police, Assistant Chief of Police, and Mayor of Leitchfield - and awards during the Monday, December 2 Leitchfield City Council meeting.
While the LPD presented its first awards shortly after the installation of its Awards Board, Henderson said they will not be given frequently.
Other awards include the Medal of Valor, the Officer’s Medal, the LPD Citation for Meritorious Service, and the Chief’s Commendation.
