Clarkson Elementary School kicked off Halloween with its third annual pumpkin decorating contest.

Clarkson Elementary Librarian Kim Keys organized the contest, which included five categories - Kindergarten and 1st Grade; 2nd and 3rd Grade; 4th and 5th Grade; Family; and Staff.

For the contest, Clarkson Elementary students, teachers, and families were asked to take characters from books and decorate pumpkins to depict the characters.

The pumpkins were put on display in the Clarkson Elementary on Monday, October 21 and will remain on display through Thursday, Oct. 31 (Halloween).

The winners of each category received gift certificates for Clarkson Elementary’s spring book fair, Keys said.

First place winners received $25; second place winners received $10; and third place winners received $5.

First place winners in each category were Kindergarten and 1st Grade, Jasmin Hussien; 2nd and 3rd Grade, Kaylee Hodges; 4th and 5th, Kerrigan Cain; Family, Ison Broughton; and Staff, Jessica Cain.

Individuals will also have the opportunity to vote for their favorite decorated pumpkin to win the “People’s Choice” award. Votes are 25 cents each, and the person whose pumpkin earns the most money will receive a $20 voucher for the spring book fair.
