The Cougar cross country team continued its fine body of work during the 2013 season with a fifth-place finish at the Fast Cats Invitational, held at Yellow Creek Park, in Owensboro, last Saturday afternoon.
The race featured a large field of teams and runners for the 5K boys varsity race. There were 29 teams on hand with 329 runners. Junior Bret Crawford ran at the front for most of the race, but finished third, slightly less than 12 seconds behind winner Trenton Fryman, from North Oldham. Crawford’s time was 15:59.14, while Fryman finished in 15:47.20.
Louisville Trinity’s Derrich Stauble finished second in 15:52.59 and helped his team finish in first with 37 points. North Oldham was second with 92 points, Daviess County was third with 107 and Louisville Eastern was fourth with 155. Grayson County scored 160 points for fifth.
Sheldon Jones had a top-20 finish for the Cougars, coming in 17th overall with a time of 16:56.17. Others earning points for the Cougars were Corbin Harris, 50th in 17:44.54, Jarrett Crawford, 54th in 17:49.04, and Clay Priddy, 65th in 18:01.50.
Running out of the points were Zach Beville, 126th in 18:51.86, Blake Meredith, 151st in 19:13.56, and Jacob Hart, 244th in 21:18.79.
There were 19 teams and 198 runners in the girls varsity 5K, which was won by Whitney O’Brien, from Daviess County, in 18:00.58.
The Lady Cougars finished 18th with 469 points. Daviess County won the team title with 21 points, while Bullitt East was second with 82, and Eastern was third with 103.
Grace Gorby had the top finish for the Lady Cougars, coming in 76th with a time of 23:32.21. Emery Crume finished 124th in 25:00.61, Tara Dunaway was 128th in 25:17.98, Myriam Hanover was 139th in 25:42.94 and Haley Hayes was 143rd in 25:56.59. Finishing out of the points for the Lady Cougars was Olivia Lucas, 162nd in 27:40.01.
