The two-story Flener Brothers, Inc. home office was destroyed in a fire on Saturday, October 5.

The Leitchfield Fire Department was the first agency to arrive on the scene at about 10 p.m., according to Leitchfield Fire Chief Jerry Schlosser.

Firefighters quickly determined the business, owned by one Steve Flener and located at 3266 Peter Cave Road in Leitchfield, was beyond saving, Schlosser said.

“There wasn’t anything you could really do,” Schlosser said. “It was a big building with a store downstairs and apartments upstairs, and it was on fire from one side to the next…You could see it from a mile away.”

The LFD, working alongside the McDaniels Volunteer Fire Department and Custer Area Volunteer Fire and Rescue, fought to extinguish the fire and protect surrounding properties, including several trailers, cars, and a truck, Schlosser said.

Firefighters set up three portable water tanks near their trucks and battled the blaze until about 3 a.m., by which time the building was “completely gone,” Schlosser said.

“In 41 years, I’d never seen us set up three [tanks],” Schlosser said.

No one was injured as a result of the fire, and Flener was reportedly in Louisville at the time of the fire, Schlosser said.
