The students and staff at the Grayson County Middle School collected food to donate to the Grayson County Alliance's Food Pantry for their "Food for Compassion" project.

They collected food from Nov. 1 through Nov. 21, and, according to Jessica Kiper, of GCMS, the school collected 3,846.33 pounds of food, which included:

•546 cans of peas

•1,033 cans of green beans

•753 cans of corn

•405 cans of potatoes

•323 cans of carrots

•120 cans of pineapples

•150 cans of peaches

•266 cans of general fruit

According to Kiper, "Food for Compassion" is a good way for GCMS to expose students to compassion, respect and thankfulness. She said they want the community to know who GCMS is and it is a way for students to "level up."

GCMS students and teachers competed by teams. The top three contributing teams were Team 3 (15,559.66 ounces of food), Team 4 (10,932 ounces of food) and Team 8 (10,842.57 ounces of food).

Several students took a field trip to the food pantry during Cougar Zone on Nov. 21 to donate the food. The students unloaded the food from the bus and sorted it onto pallets by type of food.

Kiper said, "Look at what a little bit of healthy competition and a school full of compassionate hearts can accomplish. It is absolutely amazing, and I honestly have no words that can describe the pride in the team we have here."
