The Clarkson Police Department and community members held their annual HoHo with the PoPo event, bringing Christmas to more than 100 kids in Grayson County, on Thursday, Dec. 21.

According to Clarkson Police Chief Buck Meredith, he, Santa Claus and his elf, and numerous volunteers personally delivered gifts to more than 70 of Grayson County's underprivileged children Thursday.

Additionally, the parents of nearly that many more children picked up gifts from the Clarkson Elementary School Family Resource Center and Clarkson City Hall prior to Thursday's event, Meredith said.

Along with buying gifts for underprivileged kids, the Clarkson Police Department also paid utility bills and a monthly rent; donated a significant amount of money raised to local charities; and gave cash to help fund the travel expenses of a parent whose child was in a Louisville children's hospital, according to Meredith.

To help raise funds for this year's HoHo with the PoPo, organizers coordinated a Meet the Candidates night in November, during which candidates in Grayson County elections were given the chance to speak about their campaigns and auction off items for the benefit of the event.

Approximately $13,570 was raised for this year's HoHo with the PoPo through the Meet the Candidates forum.

The HoHo with the PoPo program spends $100 per child to provide him or her with Christmas, so, after the November fundraiser, HoHo with the PoPo was able to provide Christmas to at least 135 more children.

"I'd like to say thanks to the Chatterbox Salon and Shaun Logsdon for helping with this year's HoHo with the PoPo," Meredith said. "I'd also like to say thanks to all the candidates who participated in our forum on Nov. 4 and everybody else who has been involved in making this year's event such a huge success."
