First Baptist Preschool and Kindergarten officially kicked off its 50th school year on Monday, and will mark its landmark anniversary with a celebration in September.

Early Education Director Diane Jones said the new school year is off to a good start with many returning students, as well as several new ones.

First Baptist Preschool and Kindergarten offers 3- and 4-year-old preschool classes, in addition to kindergarten, and is also a licensed daycare. Previously known as Leitchfield Christian Academy, the non-denominational school, at one time, taught all grades, but opted to return to its roots in early childhood education in recent years.

While the start of the year occasionally proves to be a challenging transition for 3-year-olds entering preschool, Jones said they began adapting quickly this year. School officials' goal is to instill in their students the morals and values of society through a Christian education, and to teach them to go out and make the world a better place.

"We expect great things out of them," Jones said.

First Baptist Preschool and Kindergarten was established by First Baptist Church in Leitchfield in 1968 with one kindergarten class under original name Ella Wortham Memorial Kindergarten.

In celebration of the school's 50th anniversary, on Sept. 16, the weekday education team will host an event starting with the morning service at 10 a.m., followed by a reception from 2-4 p.m. Cake and punch will be served, and attendees will also have the opportunity to take a tour of the school.

All past and present students and their parents, as well as staff members are encouraged to attend the celebration.

There are still openings in all classes at the school. According to Jones, kindergarten registration operates on the same deadline as Grayson County Schools, while the deadline to register for preschool is Oct. 1.
